Does john deer have off brands?

My friend had a John Deer. I told him I was thinking about getting their mulching lawnmower. He said DON';T DO IT, they are junk. I bought it, and used it to mow the grass at my house for 1 year. Next Spring it wouldn't start and I had to take it to the dealer. They told me the engine had come loose and the seals etc. needed to be replaced. (Of course, they would not pay for any of it.) It cost me $450 to buy, and after 1 year of use cost me another $250.
