Deer... Too many? Possible solutions?

I live in upstate NY and there seems to be a lot of deer around. I've been through several car accidents because of the deer, it is almost impossible to drive at night on the back roads because of all them.


Is this a common problem in other parts of the country?


Any ideas on what could be done to solve this problem?


I personally think the government should declare ';open season';. Thus hunters are allowed to get as many deer as they can with the gun they want. (At least for a time)Deer... Too many? Possible solutions?
Killing them is the only solution. Especially in the cities. Unless they release natural predators on them. More mountain lions, wolves, bears,%26amp; coyotes would really go over well in town.Deer... Too many? Possible solutions?
WI and IA have you beat. I own land on both and hunt both when I can. The deer pops in the cities are at record levels, and some cities are doing in-town bow hunting.





Putting out more tags for hunters won't solve the problem. They even tried getting hunters to donate deer to the food banks and shelters (which I've done) but it doesn't go over as well as it should.





Most deer hunters that I know (including myself) will hunt during bow season, gun season, and even sometimes muzzleloader season. One or two deer in my freezer is plenty, otherwise I'd have venison coming out of my ears. SO, after people get their one or two deer, they don't want to mess with it anymore. Who wants to shoot a doe, gut it, drag it, and drive it to the locker for the sole purpose of giving it away? I did it once, but it's not something most people feel like doing mid-way through the season.





You could be like the retards in the WI DNR that re-introduced timber wolves to the state to help control the herds. Wolves like calves better.
Even California recognizes that they have a bit of a dear problem, basically the attack on shooters rights has discouraged hunting and the result has been an increase in the deer and pig populations. This has also caused an increase in the predator populations so there are increasing encounters between soft unarmed people and carnivores.





If at all practical you might consider switching to a truck with an ARB bumper, they are made in Australia to help vehicles survive impacts with kangaroos, so they are capable of dealing with the smaller deer. If you hit a moose you have a problem though.





The government will probably still want to keep count of what is getting shot, so they may issue larger numbers of doe licenses to cut down the breeding stock.





Shot is a kinder way to go than run over.





By the way, a local news article here in CA said that a 500 acre community had a problem with deer so they were going to shoot 8 of the thousand or so to teach the others to fear humans. Do they think these deer have a newspaper or something? On the ranch I use in norcal there hasn't been any hunting in years, the deer will walk up to you while you are doing yard work to see what's going on. Just like a curious horse.
First you have to encourage hunters to take ';does';. Most hunters want the ';big buck';. And the only way to reduce the deer population is to remove ';does'; from the equation.





Secondly the number of in state residents applying for hunting permits in New York state have dropped by huge numbers. Hunters know that by applying for a hunting license you might as well be standing on the roof of your home and scream ';I OWN A FIREARM';!!! It was only a few years back that a list of license owners names was published by wack job anti firearms / anti hunters in New York.

We receive 2 or 3 a week this time of year and 1 to 2 a day durring the fall/early winter ';rut'; period. At our PD.
definately, i live in Maryland, and the firearms season for deer is only two weeks, its rediculous. with such short amount of time itd take years to learn and teach someone how to become a good deer hunter.also less restrictions on the use of rifles in all the counties where muzzleloaders, just as lethal and with almost as much a distance are allowed

Sounds like you have a hunting problem and a deer problem.


Here in the south when deer become overpopulated in areas where hunting is not allowed the state will bring in skilled archers to take the animals with bows. The meat is then donated to family's in need.





Over population is a larger problem for the deer than it is for you car. An overpopulated herd of deer will usually be lacking in quality foods and are also more likely to develop disease.





Now days deer live where natural predators dont go, places like suburbs and cities. Hunting is required to keep the population in check not only for the benefit of your car, but also for the deer. By hunting them and culling the herd we are giving the remaining deer a better chance at life not to mention a much more healthy life.





You should get someone who is knowledgeable to talk to local and state government to see if a solution can be worked out.
We have the same problem down south, and that's despite very liberal seasons and limits. I'm afraid you're just going to have to drive more slowly. It's a small price to pay for a healthy deer population.


For reference, in my state we stopped tagging ages ago, and it's not at all uncommon for people to hunt from October to February, and people tend to stop hunting only when they've had enough, maybe after putting five or six in the freezer.
Here in Illinois, we have three weekends for deer season and we cant use rifles, just shotguns with slugs, so most shots are under 100 yards, can you imagine how many more deer get killed in rifle states with say a three week season? I think they need a longer season and the shotgun states need to use rifles.
We hit a deer once while driving. You should be happy to know it died.
