the 300 mag is good for deer hunting...but personally for me it messes up too much of the meat...but then again i like it because i could could always tag a bear instead....Is a .300 savage a good whitetail deer hunting rifle? what is the shot consistency on it
.300 Savage is a most excellent Whitetail deer round. It is significantly slower than a .308 and therefore has less recoil. The accuracy depends on your rifle and the condition of the barrel and its muzzle among other things. It is not known for being an especially long range round so you do not need an uber precision rifle for that caliber. It is nearly a certainty that your rifle would be good enough for taking a deer at 200 yards. Even a 4MOA accurate rifle (yours is likely much more accurate) is going to give you enough accuracy at that range. Is a .300 savage a good whitetail deer hunting rifle? what is the shot consistency on it
The .300 Sav. was introduced in 1921 and it quickly became one of the classic deer rifle cartridges as well as an all-around big game cartridge. It was designed to out perform the .30-30 Winchester and approximate the .30-06 ballistics. The trajectory is a concern though, at 300 yards it averages a 10 to 12 inch drop. Its a good rifle for 100 yard shot in dense brush, but there a 30-06 is a much better cartridge. If you are hun ting in area that has alot of wide open spaces pick a lighter round . . . the 25-06 is an extremely versatile rifle, it is a flat shooter, has impressive terminal ballistics, very little recoil, and can be used for a variety of game. If your stuck on a .30 caliber gun I'd check out the ballistics at the guns and ammo sight i provided below, make a list of which ones are best, and start pricing rifles you can afford. Keep in mind you need to decide what distances you will be shooting at. Most deer are taken at less than 200 yards.
Savage puts out excellent firearms. The .300 savage is an excellent choice for hunting whitetail deer. I myself, own the 30.06 caliber because I have more choices in loads and bullet weight, allowing for hunting small and big game alike.
But for deer you can't go wrong with the .300 savage. Below is a free pdf book from savage arms. You will need a pdf reader to view the book.
It is a classic cartridge that will take a deer at greater ranges than 99% of the hunters can shoot. You won't regret buying one. They have tremendous knock-down power. Both dad and grandad hunted with these for decades. When dad finally switched to Remington's 7mm Mag, he complained that it did not have the same knockdown power of his 300 Savage.
Good luck!

The .300 Savage is a fine whitetail round. In fact, the Savage Model 99 (which was one of the first rifles chambered for .300 Savage) was once considered the best woods rifle ever. Go with a good 180 or 150 grain Core-Lokt bullet, and any whitetail will fall to it if you do your part.
The 300 Savage is an excellent whitetail cartridge it being just slightly less powerful than the 308/7.62 nato round and in fact was the inspiration for it. I have never heard any bad about I was just supplanted by the 308.
Accurate, hard hitting, gets the job done without a fuss. My southpaw daughter uses on one antelope, deer, bear, elk and big dogs that get in her livestock. As a hunting cartridge it is nice because it doesn't create a lot of hamburger like some I've seen.
YES very accurate hard hitting Deer rifle.*
yes no yes no yes no yes no, use a rocket launcher, or a bazooka, or a sniper to kill this deer not a rifle
