Can a .30-30 bring down a deer?

im a 13 year old looking to get a deer rifle and need a good deer caliber that i can handle recoil -wise. the cartridge needs to have good knockdown power. Can a .30-30 bring down a deer?
I think more deer have been brought down with a .30-30 than any other cartridge. It's a great round for closer distances. You can probably handle a 7mm-08, .25-06, .250 winchester, .257 roberts, and light .308 loadings. All are potent deer medicine. With the .308 you can it on most North American game and when you get older you can get heavier loadings. Otherwise, the 7mm-08 would be a nice choice if you don't want a .30-30.

And Leonardo MC, your comment has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever read. It's wrong to kill an animal to eat but it's okay to buy meat from an animal that's already killed? So the cows that provide the meat we buy at the stores aren't innocent but deer are? What difference does it make who kills the animal? It's all food that's being harvested. A deer shot in the wild isn't kept in a pen or anything and it doesn't know the difference between us and a wolf or any other predator. It is given a natural and ethical death. If you can't handle the fact that the animal you're eating had to be killed by a human then I don't know what to say. I almost have more respect for anti-hunting vegans than anti-hunting meat eaters. Pure ignorance. Can a .30-30 bring down a deer?
yes be a great shot
The 30-30 has killed more deer then any other caliber known.

It makes a outstanding deer rifle and a first time deer hunters rifle.

The 30-30 has all kinds of knock down power.

Along with deer it has killed elk and moose and bear and wild boar.

The 30-30 is a favorite of a lot of deer hunters young and old.

Hope this was of help.

My Grandad used a .30-30 for whitetail for someting like 50 years....no scope either, just a lyman peep sight. He always had venison on the table!

True what wewally says....in the woods yes....out in the wide open Western US, probably too short of a range for a .30-30
Like others have said it's been killing many deer for over a 100 years now.Now Hornandy has some new ammo designed just for lever actions that give them better ballistics than they've ever had before. It is a good starter gun especialy for woods use where ranges aren't to long.
yep
The 30-30 round has been knocking deer down since it was built in the 1800s
easily if you shoot the deer in the right place.
Plenty of knock-down power. I've killed elk with a .30-30.
If you hit him with the butt of the gun on top of the head, probably, it's a good short range gun. I don't know where you live but it works as a good woods gun. Out west I would want something with more range .243,.270, 30-06.
Yes, a .30-.30 has been knocking down deer for many many

years.....I would go with something with a little more range

and flatter trajectory like a .270 .
A 30-30 is an excellent gun for deer. As a matter of fact that is what I started my kid own. Took one shot and whamo an 8 pointer. Very proud daddy.
270 is excellent. I've been using one since i started hunting 7 years ago..when i was 13. yes a 30.30 is a good choice though. They will work for both deer and elk.
Yes a 30/30 has more then enough knock down power for deer out to 100 yards.Even further with the new nosler bullets by Winchester.Another good choice is the 270,my dad shoots one made buy browning with the ';BOSS'; on it does not kick at all. Also try a fox river break, this will help with recoil to.Whatever your choice good luck hunting keep the tradition alive.
I have to agree that .30-30 will work; but the range is not good.

This day and age they have much better performing ammuniton. I'd do a bit more research on the current offerings for medium game calibers.
For many many years it has been a great deer round, and will continue for many more. It is however a short range round. If your looking for something to reach a bit further, with out adding recoil go for a .270 win.
In the US, the .30-30 has probably taken more legal deer than any other cartridge in history.
The 30-30 has brought down zillions of deer. It's a bit limited, though, and there are lots of choices, though, for a 13 year old that will do a great job, and expand your hunting range, without kicking the bejeezus out of you, so you needn't limit yourself on that account. One of my kids chose differently, but I bought 7mm08's for two of my boys when they were your age, and one for my father when he got up in years and couldn't handle his bigger rifle any more, and I myself use a 7mm Mauser as much as anything, though I have lots of rifles, both bigger and smaller calibers, for deer hunting. These rounds are very pleasant to shoot and more than capable of taking deer at any reasonable hunting range. The really important thing when you pick out your deer rifle is to get one that fits. Until your next growth spurt, you'll probably need a shorter ';length of pull'; than is standard, and if the stock fits you'll feel the recoil a lot less. If you were my kid, I'd probably look (again) at the Remington model 7 in 7mm08 or 260 Remington. Other gun makers have similar products.
Yes it will. It is a great gun. It isnt really a good long distance gun because it has a heavy bullet. I would go for a .270 if you reload because you can reload them and make the really pwerful. They are both good guns, but the .270 is a good long distance gun. I have a .243, and it is an awesome long distance gun, good for deer, but if you ever get into bigger game, you are very limited.

Good luck.
all the time good brush gun
Ummmm...that's the main reason why 30-30 exists.
yes it will if it is not a long shot such has shooting out of a blind, but i would use a .273 its recoil is not to bad. my 15 year old niece shots one
Yes the 30-30 is an excellent deer cartridge. Use a bullet in the 150 to 175 grain. You might also look at a .243 cal. I have used it for many years with great results.
A .30-30 is an excellent choice as a deer rifle. Probably a toss up between the .30-30 and the 30/06 as to the most common deer round in the US.
A well placed .22 can bring down a deer if your an expert marksman and like to track blood trails. But I would go with the 270. The 30/30 would do the trick. Or 12 gauge with 00 buck that would be fun.
hmm...your thirteen years old...maybe you shouldn't be shooting deer because it's barbaric and pointless. maybe back when you'd have to eat it...but you can drive a mile down the road and buy food...you don't have to kill an innocent animal.

because that's really stupid.
